Kalpana Chawla was born in a small town in Haryana, India. From a young age, she was fascinated by aircraft and the sky. Her ambition to fly led her to pursue a degree in aeronautical engineering from Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh.
She moved to the United States for higher education and earned a Master’s and a Ph.D. in aerospace engineering. Her academic excellence and passion led her to NASA.

Kalpana joined NASA in 1995 and was selected for her first space mission in 1997 as a mission specialist aboard Space Shuttle Columbia STS-87. She made history by becoming the first Indian-born woman to fly in space.
