🧑🎓 Early Life & Education
Jagdeep Dhankhar was born on 18 May 1951 in Kithana, a village in the Jhunjhunu district of Rajasthan. He belongs to a Hindu Jat farming family. He completed his early education from a local government school, then moved on to Ghardhana Middle School, and later studied at Sainik School, Chittorgarh.
He pursued a B.Sc. in Physics (Honours) and later earned a Law degree (LLB) from the University of Rajasthan, Jaipur.
👨⚖️ Legal Career
Dhankhar began practicing law in 1979 after enrolling with the Bar Council of Rajasthan. In 1990, he was designated as a Senior Advocate by the Rajasthan High Court.
He practiced in various legal forums, including the Rajasthan High Court and the Supreme Court of India. He handled high-profile cases in steel, coal, mining, and international commercial arbitration. He also served as the youngest President of the Rajasthan High Court Bar Association.
📜 Political Career
In 1989, Jagdeep Dhankhar was elected to the 9th Lok Sabha from the Jhunjhunu constituency in Rajasthan on a Janata Dal ticket. He was appointed Union Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs in the Chandra Shekhar government from 1990 to 1991.
He later served as a Member of the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly (MLA) from 1993 to 1998, representing Kishangarh. Dhankhar joined the Congress Party in 1991 but shifted to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) around 2003.
🏛️ Governor of West Bengal
In July 2019, he was appointed as the Governor of West Bengal and took oath on 30 July 2019. His tenure saw frequent clashes with the state government, particularly with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, over administrative and constitutional issues.
⚖️ Vice President of India (2022–2025)
Jagdeep Dhankhar was elected as the 14th Vice President of India on 11 August 2022, defeating Margaret Alva with a significant margin.
He was sworn in by President Draupadi Murmu and served as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. His term was marked by notable debates and occasional disputes with opposition parties, some of whom accused him of partiality during parliamentary proceedings.
🚪 Resignation
On 21 July 2025, Dhankhar announced his resignation from the post of Vice President, citing health reasons. He stepped down two years before the end of his scheduled term, which was set to continue until 2027. The resignation generated discussion in political circles, with speculation about its timing and background.

Jagdeep Dhankhar is married to Dr. Sudesh Dhankhar. The couple had two children. Sadly, their son Deepak passed away at the age of 14 due to a brain hemorrhage. Their daughter, Kamna, survives him.
